He's been a fixture of French pop culture for decades. The lyrics, the music, the style that ran from "phaw" to "dah", from musicals to romance novels, from Michel Drucker to Leonard Cohen. He has been at the forefront of cultural phenomena in France and beyond. And while his songs were frequently about love or his own lost youthfulness, few people know that he also had a successful career as a novelist and playwright in his later years. During his lifetime, he wrote a number of classic songs that still stand out in the collective memory of French popular music. He wrote the words whilst in Morocco in 1960, when he was shocked at the poverty he found there after a year spent travelling around Africa. For decades they became the secret weapon in a series of musicals in France and abroad. They became a cornerstone of French popular music and anthems for many. Three of the songs in the top ten list of all time best-selling singles in France were his: "Cheveux longs", "Milord", and "Pauvre Lola". In 2001, he was awarded a gold disc for over 100,000 copies sold in France alone for these three famous songs. In 2009 he was awarded another one at a grand ceremony in Paris attended by President Nicolas Sarkozy and attended by a large number of artists including Celine Dion, who worked with him for her album recorded in Spanish. Kahil's real name is Mahmoud Fadlallah. He was born in Alexandria in Egypt in 1930 to Lebanese parents. But his musical career began when he arrived in Paris at the age of 20. He adopted his stage name after attending a concert for Egyptian musician 'Khalil al-Halili'. He composed music for hit films including "Le Pacha" (1963), "Le grand blond avec une chaussure noire" (1996) and provided music for singers including Nino Ferrer, Serge Gainsbourg, Charles Aznavour, Mireille Mathieu, Michel Delpech and Johnny Hallyday. "Pauvre Lola" was used in the French film "Les amants de minuit". It is said that he composed the famous French song "Aux armes et devant les toros". He wrote about his life in Paris. He had a house at Fresnes, near Notre Dame Cathedral, with a large backyard where he would entertain his friends. There were parties on Friday nights, on Sunday afternoons and evenings, on Thursday afternoons. At one party there were many people of different races and origins (he wrote about this in "I Was There"). This meant lots of fun but also confusion for Kahil. cfa1e77820
